What an unspeakable tragedy. I have worked closely with the John Day base for several years -a finer bunch of people I have never known. Not just clients, but friends.

While I take this fire season off to be with my wife and baby boy, I miss the camaraderie of being out there with the guys, the travel, the work, the beauty, the helicopter rides. Many of my closest friends, and both my father and brother are out there even now. I’ve watched with horror as this has unfolded upon your people. I am so sorry. There is truly no way to prepare for this, or to recover except with time and love. You are all in my thoughts.

Though i had never met any of the fallen, I am sure that we had worked the lines together some where. I pray every day that we in the fire community learn from this and other tragic accidents, so that our families do not have to endure any more accidents. My heart goes out to the families, friends and co workers of all of the men who have lost their lives. I pray that you all stand proud and cherish the memories given to you. A hero is a hero to all, whether the hero thinks so or he does not.
